Natural wedding makeup can mean something different for every bride. For some, it may mean huge eyelashes with contour and blush – but for others, it could just mean a tint of eyeshadow and some light foundation. Generally, when referring to natural wedding makeup, most tend to mean the latter of the two.

Getting that glowing minimal look may seem easy – but this isn’t necessarily so! Achieving this look means you’ll need to know exactly what you’re looking for – and are able to communicate your wishes accurately to your makeup artist. Keep the tips below in mind so you can get that glowing and natural wedding makeup you deserve!

Take the extra time to research different makeup artists who specialise in wedding makeup, making sure to look at their portfolios to get a better idea of their style. Use photos as inspiration

Photos can be a great and effective way to give you a better idea of what natural look you’re going for and can really help you communicate this to your makeup artist. Start by looking online and finding different makeup that looks similar to what you would want on your wedding day. It doesn’t matter whether these are on models, brides or celebrities, or if this look isn’t exactly the same as what you would want but rather an inspiration. However, it is still recommended to find a few makeups looks on those with the same skin type as you. A couple of photos will help you get a much clearer image of what you want in your mind.

Use accurate descriptions

Despite having some photos prepared, it’s beneficial to also have some words ready to describe the look you’re going for. Using terms such as minimal, natural, fresh, understated and barely visible will help your makeup artist to better understand what you’re looking for. Even simply stating you’re looking for ‘makeup that you can’t tell is there’ will help get the picture across. The more specific you are, the better the job that your makeup artist can do. Telling them ‘I want my cheekbones to stand out or ‘I want my lips to have a subtle tint can really make the difference between a successful or failed makeup look. Reading interviews with your favourite makeup artists can really help in this area since they use lots of descriptive words to talk about some of their featured looks.

Get a makeup trial

Makeup trials are an important part of getting the best natural wedding look out there. A makeup trial lets you see how your makeup looks, allowing for any tweaks and perfections to be made before the big day. Your makeup artist is there to work with you, so don’t be afraid to put your thoughts out there and to make some changes if you’re not completely satisfied with your look. There’s a great chance that you’ll be happy with your makeup and won’t need to make any major changes – however, it’s always a good idea to hold a makeup trial just in case. A gorgeous natural wedding look all depends on the subtlety of the makeup, meaning that an eyeliner that is slightly too thick or a blush that is too rosy could change the whole finished look.

Establish a healthy skincare routine

Makeup goes on easily and much better when it is applied on skin that is in the best condition possible. This means your skin should be hydrated and healthy (not sun-damaged!) – and receiving the appropriate care for any skin problems. The only way to achieve this is to find a skincare routine that works for you, preferably starting it at least a few months before your wedding – or just as early as possible. Using SPF, thoroughly cleaning your skin, using products that are catered to your skin and regularly drinking water can all help your skin a great deal.

Moisturize your lips regularly

Your lips are a big part of your look and there’s nothing worse than being stuck with chapped, dry or flaking lips on your wedding day! To avoid this issue, first, figure out what may be causing your lips to become dry. This may be due to windy weather, since it easily saps away the moisture out of your lips and skin. Before applying any lip balm, make sure to first exfoliate to get rid of dead skin. This can be done by using a hydrating lip scrub. Next, apply your lip balm or lip mask and let it fully seep into your lips for a couple of minutes. Continue following these steps whenever your lips are feeling dry, and soon flaky lips will no longer be an issue – and won’t ruin your perfect, glowing natural look on your big day!
